Long distance relationship.?

So my friend dated this foreign exchange german student while in high school a year ago. They are no longer together only because she went back to germany for like 9 months. Well now her and one of her friends from germany go to college in america but are 9 hours away from the college that me and my friend go to. My friend and his ex meet up sometimes (id say 3-4 times a year, becuz of the distance). Well i went with my friend when he went to visit her and me and the other girl from germany kinda hit it off. I know she likes me as i like her and we talk on the phone all the time. Id LOVE to date this girl but idk if im being unrealistic because of the distance or if im just wasting my time. Should i stay in contact with her? If so, is it weird to ask someone out (to be my girlfriend) to be in a long distance relationship, im hoping maybe after college it could somehow work.
